In relation to European history, Drobak does not take up much time. Drobak was established as a parish in 1823 and established as a village in January 1938. A significant WW II event occurred in Drobak on April 9, 1940. The German cruiser, Blucher, was sunk in the Battle of Drobak Sound. This allowed the Royal Court in Oslo to conduct a safe evacuation from the Germans.
Folklore says that another significant event occurred north of Drobak when Santa was born under a rock in Vindfangerbukta. This led to Drobak as being named the official Christmas Village. It is the home to the Christmas House and the location of Santa's Post Office. Chrismas is celebrated 365 days a year and is every child's dream come true.
We could not come to Norway without visiting Drobak. We took a regional bus from Oslo and traveled to Drobak today. Elevations increased as we went high and we entered snow country. A beautiful drive through the country. Drobak is a quaint village. We visited the Christmas House, saw Santa's post office, and had a good lunch... a Norwegian shrimp sandwich that Linda and I split. Before we ate, we decided to have a cup of hot chocolate. I ordered two cups, and the waitress wanted to know if we wanted the grand size. I said sure. She brought us two bowls of hot chocolate. (see the picture)
After lunch we returned to Oslo and went to the Oslo Cathedral for an organ recital accompanied by a choir. The music was great...though it was all in Norwegian, we recognized several traditional hymns that we sing at Christmas. The choir of about 24 was composed of boys and men from about 10 years to 65 years old. It lasted one hour and was a great way to cap off a good day.
After the concert, it was time for dinner. Linda picked a Norwegian restaurant, Den Glade Gris. They had smoked whale on the menu. I came for the Norwegian experience. I liked it, so did Linda.
Tomorrow we will travel to Lillehammer for an overnight visit.
