Epilogue 12/15/2024

 This is the final blog entry on our Norway adventure.  We got up about 4:00 AM on the the 10th, checked out of our hotel and walked to the train station for transportation to the airport.  The train left at 6:00 AM and took about 22 minutes.  We checked in at KLM airlines and got through security around 7:30 AM.  Our plane was scheuled to depart for Amsterdam at 9:20 AM.  We had a good breakfast on the concourse and went to our gate.  We had about 1400 kroner (Norwegian money..about $150.00) left.  Breakfast was 600 kroner, so we had 800 kroner left.  I stayed at the gate with our carryons and Linda went shopping. After she spent it, she joined me at the gate.

Our flight from Oslo to AMS was about 1:30 hours.  When we got to AMS, we had a two hour layover to clear customs and go to our next gate for our flight to Atlanta.  This flight was scheduled to depart at 1:00 PM.  After a flight of 9:30 hours duration, we arrived at ATL at 5:00 PM ET.  We cleared customs, they welcomed us to the USA, we reclaimed our luggage, and checked it through to Montgomery.  We now had a 5 hour layover.  Our flight was scheduled to leave at 10:30 PM ET.  We took off at 11:00 PM and arrived at 10:45 PM CT.  Small airport, not that many people.  We had to wait 45 minutes before our luggage came off of the carousel.  We finally got home about 12:30 AM. 

Oslo is 7:00 hours in front of our time zone.

4:00 AM in Oslo is 9:00 PM in Elmore County  9:30 AM in Oslo is 12:30 AM in Elmore County.

Our return trip took us 29 hours, from the time we got up in Oslo until we got home in Wetumpka.

It was a great trip... I would do it again....

 Our flight from Montgomery, with intermediate stops in Atlanta, Amsterdam, and Oslo went as planned.  We left Montgomery and had a two hour layover.  We went to the Delta Club, ate dinner, and bordered our flight. There was a short delay departing Atlanta.  Three passengers that were scheduled to be on our flight were "no shows".  Their baggage was located and removed from our aircraft and we then departed.  Our flight was on KLM.  I think I prefer KLM over Delta for international travel.  Our dinner meal on this flight was lobster salad and a Poblano Pepper with Cotija cheese on romesco sauce.  Dessert was vanilla mousse with salted caramel syrup.   When we arrived in Amsterdam, we had a two hour layover.  We cleared customs and boarded another KLM flight for our last leg.  We arrived in Oslo at 4:00 PM.  Total time, including layover was 15 hours.  When planning our winter trip to Norway, the town of Lillehammer kept coming up.  We were familiar with the village because  the 1994 Winter Olympics were held here.  At that time there were about 25,000 permanent residents living in Lillehammer and they assumed the monumental task of hosting a worldwide event like the Olymics. This area had been settled since the Norwegian Ice Age.  The village itself came into existence in 1827 when it obtained rights as a market town for this region.  The population at that time was 50.  This area has always been popular for the winter sports, due to the abundant snow and nearby mountains.  When the 1994 Winter Olympics were awarded to Lillehammer, it put it on the worldwide map.  Map sales increased greatly.  What would Christmas be without snow?  Snow is seldom seen in South Alabama.  We decided that a trip to the European Christmas markets would be in order for 2024.  We settled on Oslo, Norway.  Join us as we travel to the far North in Europe.  Norway.  Thanksgiving is behind us and Christmas is coming. We decided to use Oslo as our base and travel out from there.  We will take the train to Lillehammer for an overnight trip and take a bus to Drobak (Santa's home town).  Snow, the Northern Lights, Christmas Markets, sleigh rides, tour the fjords... that and more... join us as we begin a journey of exploration
